Bengaluru is one step closer to introducing its first driverless metro train. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is currently awaiting the final approval from the Railways Ministry. Once approved, this metro will run on the Yellow Line, offering better public transport and reduced travel time for commuters.
Approval Process for the Driverless Metro
The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has already completed a statutory inspection of the new driverless metro train for the Yellow Line. This inspection is an important step before the Railways Ministry can approve the rolling stock and signal systems.
Once the Railways Ministry gives its approval, the CMRS will conduct a final inspection of the entire Yellow Line R-5 section, ensuring that everything is safe and functional.
The first six-coach driverless train arrived in Bengaluru from China on February 14, 2024. The train was built by CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co Ltd, a Chinese company contracted to deliver 216 metro coaches, including this driverless prototype.
Yellow Line: A Major Boost for Bengaluru Metro
The Yellow Line of Namma Metro is expected to open by April, with four driverless trains initially in service. This metro corridor will cover 19 km and connect Bommasandra to Central Silk Board, a high-traffic area in Bengaluru.
With 16 metro stations, the Yellow Line will play a crucial role in reducing traffic congestion and improving public transport across Bengaluru. Commuters will benefit from faster travel times, increased train frequency, and a smoother journey.

Safety Checks for the Driverless Metro
Before launching the new metro service, BMRCL has planned 37 different tests to ensure the train’s safety and efficiency. These include:
- Static and Electrical Circuit Tests – Conducted after assembling the metro coaches to check their electrical and mechanical systems.
- Mainline Testing – Ensures that the train performs well on the actual metro tracks.
- System Integration Testing – Verifies that the train’s signalling, telecom, and power supply systems work smoothly together.
This entire testing process takes about four months, ensuring the metro is safe for passengers before it begins operations.
What’s Next for Bengaluru’s Driverless Metro?
After the final approval from the Railways Ministry, BMRCL will start running trial operations. Once all systems are cleared, Bengaluru’s first driverless metro will officially start carrying passengers.
The launch of the Yellow Line is a significant step toward modernizing Bengaluru’s public transport. This new-age metro system will provide a faster, safer, and more efficient travel option for thousands of daily commuters.
With the expansion of the Namma Metro network, Bengaluru is moving closer to a world-class metro system, reducing traffic congestion and making public transport more convenient for everyone.
