The Dharampal Satyapal Group (DS Group), a leading FMCG conglomerate, has partnered with Liquid Trees, a climate tech startup, to launch India’s first outdoor Liquid Tree. This innovative structure, located at DS Group’s headquarters in Noida, represents a unique step forward in combating air pollution and promoting urban sustainability.
What Is the Liquid Tree?
The Liquid Tree is an urban photo-bioreactor, often referred to as a “tree in liquid form” due to the microalgae solution it contains. The cubical installation holds 1600 liters of this solution, which can absorb as much carbon dioxide as six fully grown trees. Microalgae, being photosynthetic microorganisms, not only remove particulate matter and sequester carbon dioxide but also produce oxygen.
Additionally, harvested microalgae contribute to a circular economy by serving as a nutrient-rich feed for local plants. Unlike traditional trees that take years to mature, microalgae can be deployed in just weeks, making them a practical solution for cities grappling with pollution.
Commitment to Sustainability
Speaking about the initiative, Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairman of DS Group, highlighted the need for innovative solutions to tackle climate change and air quality issues. He described the Liquid Tree as both a functional tool against pollution and a symbol of society’s ability to innovate for a sustainable future.
Liquid Trees India spokesperson Abhinav Palaparthy emphasized the educational value of microalgae, the Earth’s first oxygen producers. He applauded DS Group’s commitment to green practices, noting the installation’s significance as India’s first Liquid Tree.
Vision for a Greener Future
The DS Group is well-known for its dedication to sustainability. Its headquarters have achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification and LEED Zero Carbon Certification under the US Green Building Council.
Founded in 1929, DS Group is a prominent name in FMCG, with brands like Catch, Pulse, and Rajnigandha under its umbrella. The company’s efforts to integrate sustainability into its operations reflect its vision of a healthier and greener future for India.
The Liquid Tree installation is a pioneering move that not only addresses urban environmental challenges but also inspires communities to adopt eco-friendly practices for a sustainable tomorrow.
