Global advertising holding company WPP has expanded its strategic partnership with Google through a new frontier research collaboration with Google DeepMind. The joint initiative focuses on developing artificial intelligence-powered production applications tailored for global brands and marketing campaigns.
The expanded alliance made its initial public debut at the Cannes Lions 2026 festival. As part of the rollout, WPP and Google DeepMind demonstrated the capabilities of the collaboration through a creative pilot project for Duracell’s latest global football campaign, which features the brand’s well-known mascot, the Duracell Bunny.
Localization Focus
The pilot project addressed the technical challenge of enabling the animated character to perform lip-syncing across multiple languages while retaining its original facial expressions and distinct personality traits. To execute this, engineering teams from both companies developed custom model capabilities that dynamically alter the character's mouth movements and expressions to match regional audio tracks.
The deployment of these localized assets points to a significant shift in how multinational corporations handle regional marketing distributions. Historically, adapting centralized creative assets for diverse international markets required manual re-animation or separate regional shoots, adding significant overhead costs and production delays to global product rollouts.
Global Scaling
By automating the localization process, the technology establishes a framework for brands to scale hyper-local creative executions without losing visual consistency across international jurisdictions. The commercial application of these deep learning models allows marketing assets to be rapidly modified for different geographies, bypassing traditional localization bottlenecks.
"The integration of advanced research from Google DeepMind into our production workflows allows for a fundamentally different approach to global storytelling. By successfully executing the Duracell campaign, it has been demonstrated that highly complex, multi-lingual creative work can be delivered at scale while fully preserving the core emotional identity of a brand's intellectual property," the WPP leadership team stated in a formal briefing regarding the collaboration.
The corporate announcement coincided with a strong performance by WPP networks at the Cannes Lions 2026 awards. Multiple agencies under the holding company's umbrella secured top tier recognitions during the festival. VML’s 'Lucky Fan Index' campaign for Wisła Kraków Football Club secured the Grand Prix in the Creative Commerce category alongside a Gold Lion in Brand Experience & Activation.
Other WPP agencies recorded notable wins, including Circus Grey’s 'SOS POS' for BCP in the Brand Experience category. Additionally, a collaborative effort by DAVID, Mindshare, and WPP Production on the 'r/eal reviews' campaign for Dove Hair earned a Gold Lion in Creative Strategy, while VML and Burson secured a Gold Lion for the 'Oreo Cows' initiative.
Future Market
The deepening of the commercial ties between WPP and Google comes at a time when legacy advertising holding groups are facing intense pressure to integrate enterprise-grade technology into their core operations. The partnership seeks to establish standardized automated tools that balance high-volume content generation with strict brand safety and copyright compliance.
The joint engineering efforts will continue to focus on creating production pipelines where generative tools are embedded directly into the asset creation stage. This systemic integration is expected to reduce the time-to-market for complex multimedia campaigns, allowing corporate clients to respond to real-time market data across various consumer segments.
