Nokia to Build Largest R&D Lab in Chennai with ₹450 Crore Investment

Nokia has revealed plans to expand its Fixed Networks R&D facility lab in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This new lab will be one of Nokia’s largest research centers worldwide and the most extensive for its Fixed Networks division. The facility will focus on advancements in technologies such as 10G, 25G, 50G, and 100G passive optical networks (PON), Fixed Wireless Access, Wi-Fi, multi-dwelling unit (MDU) solutions, and access network and home controllers. Company investing ₹450 crore to build its largest Fixed Networks R&D lab, supported by Tamil Nadu government.

The expansion is supported by the Tamil Nadu government, which has provided essential infrastructure, regulatory, and policy backing. This collaboration underscores Chennai’s growing role in Nokia’s global operations and highlights the region’s increasing importance as a technology hub.

Tamil Nadu Minister’s Statement

Dr. TRB Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Government of Tamil Nadu, expressed pride in Tamil Nadu’s development as a global R&D destination. He highlighted that the new facility, set to be the largest Fixed Networks lab within Nokia, represents a significant achievement. This success is attributed to initiatives like Naan Mudhalvan and the Tamil Nadu R&D Policy 2022, which have attracted substantial investments and created high-value job opportunities.

Formalizing the Expansion

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Guidance Tamil Nadu and Nokia to formalize the expansion. The signing took place in San Francisco, California, in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru. M. K. Stalin and Dr. T. R. B Rajaa.

Nokia’s Commitment

Vimalkumar Kothandaraman, head of Fixed Networks for Asia Pacific at Nokia, emphasized the importance of the new R&D facility for Nokia’s Fixed Networks strategy. He noted that this investment demonstrates Nokia’s commitment to advancing technology in India and globally. The MoU strengthens Nokia’s collaboration with the Tamil Nadu government to drive innovations in the telecom industry and expand its world-class R&D presence in Chennai.
