Renault India has added new versions to its Kiger compact SUV lineup. These new models are designed to make turbo performance and premium features more affordable in the entry-level SUV market. The company has launched a new mid-level trim called Evolution+, available with different engine options, to fill the gap between the basic and top models.
Segment Strategy
India’s sub-four-meter SUV market has become very competitive, with both Indian and global carmakers adding more features. To keep up, Renault has moved some high-end features into its mid-level models. The new Evolution+ variant comes with both the 1.0-litre normal petrol engine (with manual and AMT gearboxes) and the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine (with manual gearbox).
With this update, the Renault Kiger Turbo has become the cheapest turbocharged SUV in India’s entry-level segment. The new lineup is designed to give buyers smoother price steps between different models, helping Renault reach more customers at a time when car buying sentiment is uncertain.
Feature Focus
New corporate strategy behind the new expansion is to add popular tech features at lower prices. The Evolution+ trim now includes a smart access card with push-button start/stop, automatic climate control, and wireless phone connectivity. By offering these features outside the top models, Renault wants to attract city buyers who care more about comfort and convenience inside the car than just looks.
With the new Kiger range, we’re bringing turbocharged performance, premium features, and greater choice within easier reach.— Francisco Hidalgo, S&M VP, Renault India
"At Renault, our focus has always been on making innovation and mobility more accessible to customers. With the new Kiger range, we are taking this commitment further by bringing turbo performance, premium features, and greater choice within easier reach," Francisco Hidalgo, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Renault India, stated during the announcement.
This move comes as carmakers in India are under pressure to keep sales strong while dealer stocks are rising. By changing the value plan of the Kiger, Renault wants to attract more first-time SUV buyers, especially those shifting from premium hatchbacks.
"As customer expectations continue to evolve, accessibility today goes beyond price—it is about enabling a more complete and rewarding ownership experience. This update reflects our effort to democratise features and technologies that matter most, while staying true to Kiger’s core promise of performance," Hidalgo added.
Long-Term Positioning
Utility vehicles are the main drivers of car sales in India, with compact SUVs making up a big share. To stand out, Renault has adjusted the price and features of its turbo-petrol Kiger so that it looks different from rivals, who only offer turbo models at higher prices.
The success of this plan will depend on how well Renault uses its rural and semi-urban dealer network to promote these mid-level options against new competitors.
