JioBLAST Appoints Zohair Shaikh as Head of Marketing

JioBLAST Zohair Shaikh

JioBLAST, the competitive entertainment and esports venture, has appointed marketing veteran Zohair Shaikh as its Head of Marketing. The venture, which combines the digital infrastructure of Reliance Jio with the international esports expertise of BLAST, aims to scale the competitive gaming ecosystem across the Indian market.

Shaikh announced his appointment publicly, highlighting the current trajectory of the Indian gaming sector. His transition to the joint venture comes at a time when traditional entertainment formats are experiencing shifts in youth viewership, with competitive gaming emerging as a primary alternative.

Growth Inflection

The Indian esports industry has transitioned from a niche hobby into a structured commercial sector over the last few years. Increased smartphone penetration and low data tariffs have expanded the addressable audience for competitive gaming beyond Tier-1 cities.

Commenting on the industry's potential, Zohair Shaikh stated, "The most interesting industries are often the ones people underestimate before they become impossible to ignore. Esports in India is approaching that inflection point."
He noted that the sector is developing into a broader cultural segment, sustained by independent creators, localized communities, and evolving technology frameworks. "I am excited to contribute to a category that is redefining entertainment while creating new opportunities for talent, creators, and businesses in India," Shaikh added, while acknowledging Charlie Cowdrey, Chief Executive Officer of JioBLAST, for the mandate.

Long Experience

Shaikh brings over 15 years of experience across digital marketing, brand strategy, business growth, and client management. His professional background includes working with multiple Indian brands to scale their digital footprints and consumer acquisition strategies.

Prior to this appointment, Shaikh managed Go-To-Market (GTM) strategy and product monetization at BigBang.Social. In that role, his primary focus remained on driving business growth, building advertiser solutions, and managing user acquisition initiatives. His corporate track record also includes leadership positions at agencies and firms such as aló, Span Communications, Everymedia Technologies, Market Men Consumer Connect & Events, and Interactive Avenues.

Additionally, Shaikh has entrepreneurial experience within the digital ecosystem. He previously co-founded Jazzap, a digital marketing agency that managed the digital mandates for brands including Urban Ladder and Mahindra Insurance. This mix of agency experience, corporate strategy, and startup management is expected to guide JioBLAST's upcoming consumer outreach campaigns.

Gaming Market

The domestic gaming market has seen increased corporate participation, with telecom operators and digital platforms investing in tournament IPs and broadcasting rights. For JioBLAST, the immediate challenge lies in converting casual mobile gamers into structured esports viewers and participants.

The venture seeks to utilize Jio’s massive digital distribution network to broadcast international tournament formats while developing grassroots talent pools within India. Media buyers suggest that localizing global esports formats requires a distinct marketing approach that balances core gaming communities with mainstream viewers. Shaikh’s immediate mandate will involve establishing brand identity, securing non-endemic brand sponsorships, and driving viewer engagement across regional markets.
