GreenCell Mobility, the parent company of electric bus brand NueGo, has raised Rs 330 crore in equity funding from Impact Fund Denmark (IFDK). The investment comes as the electric mobility company prepares to add about 4,500 buses to its fleet.
GreenCell is an Eversource Capital portfolio company and operates in the electric Mobility-as-a-Service segment. It runs electric buses on intra-city and intercity routes and is also building charging infrastructure and other services linked to electric transport.
Following the planned deployment, GreenCell expects to operate more than 5,000 electric buses across 105 cities. The company currently has investors including Eversource Capital, International Finance Corporation (IFC), British International Investment (BII) and Tata Capital.
GreenCell E-Bus Fleet
The new capital is primarily linked to the company expansion plans, with around 4,500 electric buses expected to be rolled out. GreenCell operates an OEM-agnostic model, meaning its electric bus operations are not tied to a single vehicle manufacturer.
Company has built its business around operating electric buses rather than only supplying vehicles. Its activities cover public and intercity transport services, along with the infrastructure required to support electric bus operations.
The fresh equity also comes as GreenCell seeks to execute its existing order book. The company has not disclosed the total value of the order book or provided a detailed timeline for deployment of the additional buses.
New Cities Target
GreenCell currently operates across both intra-city and intercity transportation. Its intra-city operations are focused on urban public transport, while intercity services connect different cities through electric bus routes.
Devndra Chawla, Managing Director and CEO of GreenCell Mobility, said the company has built operating experience across both segments and is preparing to handle larger deployments. “We have established a strong presence across both intra-city and intercity transportation, with the operating experience to manage increasingly large and complex deployment,” Chawla said.
He added that the company focus remains on executing its order book while maintaining reliability, efficiency and customer experience. “This equity investment gives us greater headroom to accelerate our plans,” Chawla said.
Electric Mobility Funding
The investment from IFDK adds to the capital raised by GreenCell from institutional investors. The company has previously attracted funding from Eversource Capital, IFC, BII and Tata Capital as it expanded its electric bus operations.
GreenCell operates in the eMaaS segment, where mobility operators provide electric transport services rather than limiting their role to vehicle ownership. This model can include fleet management, route operations, charging and other support systems needed to run electric buses.
For the company, scaling the fleet also requires expansion of charging capacity and operational systems. GreenCell has said it is developing charging infrastructure and other enabling solutions alongside its electric bus business.
NueGo Parent Company
NueGo is GreenCell Mobility electric intercity bus brand and operates as part of the wider eMaaS business. The service focuses on scheduled electric bus travel between cities, while GreenCell also operates intra-city electric transport services.
GreenCell Mobility was established in 2018 and is backed by Eversource Capital. Its business model is based on operating electric public transport fleets and providing mobility services rather than manufacturing electric buses itself. NueGo was launched as part of this strategy to build an intercity electric bus network.
The company has expanded its operations as state transport authorities and private mobility operators increase the use of electric buses. Its OEM-agnostic approach allows GreenCell to work with different electric bus manufacturers while managing fleet operations and related infrastructure.
GreenCell Charging Network
The planned addition of 4,500 buses will increase the scale of GreenCell operations significantly. The company will need to match the fleet expansion with charging facilities, route planning and other operating capabilities across the cities where the buses are deployed.
The Rs 330 crore equity investment gives GreenCell additional capital for this expansion without being structured as debt funding. However, the company has not disclosed how the investment will be divided between vehicle deployment, charging infrastructure and other operating requirements.
With more than 5,000 electric buses targeted across 105 cities after the planned rollout, the company is positioning the latest fundraise around fleet expansion. The pace at which these buses enter operation and the performance of the expanded network will determine the next phase of GreenCell Mobility growth.
