CHOSEN Secures $5M Series A to Expand Dermatologist-Led Skincare

Chosen Series A Funding

Dermatologist-led skincare brand CHOSEN has secured $5 million in a Series A funding round, signaling a significant shift in investor appetite toward clinically validated personal care. The round was led by Fireside Ventures, with strategic participation from BOLD (L’Oréal’s corporate venture capital fund) and Alkemi Growth Capital.

The fundraise is notable for its heavy backing from the medical community, featuring a cohort of practicing dermatologists and Avnish Anand, co-founder and former CEO of CaratLane. CHOSEN plans to deploy the fresh capital to strengthen its Research & Development (R&D) capabilities, expand its pipeline of evidence-based products, and scale its "Centre of Excellence."

CHOSEN positions itself as India’s first "exposome-based" skincare brand. The exposome refers to the totality of environmental exposures—such as pollution, diet, and climate—that affect an individual's skin over a lifetime. Unlike many digital-first brands that rely on rapid manufacturing and social media trends, CHOSEN follows a clinic-to-consumer model specifically tailored for melanin-rich Indian skin.

The startup’s portfolio targets four primary domains: pigmentation, skin texture, contouring, and hair aging. By combining topical formulations with nutraceuticals, the brand attempts to address skincare from both internal and external perspectives.

Closing The Gap

"Indian dermatologists have contributed significantly to therapeutic dermatology, but personal care has been left behind, shaped largely by market trends borrowed from circumstances that aren’t ours," said Dr. Renita Rajan, Founder and CEO of CHOSEN. "CHOSEN is dermatology stepping up to close that gap, built for the Indian exposome and the Indian genome. This round gives us the runway to deepen our R&D, bring more dermatologists into product development, and build the evidence base that holistic anti-aging for Indian skin deserves."

The investment from L’Oréal’s BOLD fund further validates the "dermocosmetics" segment in India, which has seen a steep climb in consumer interest. Brands that can prove efficacy through clinical data are increasingly outperforming those that rely solely on "clean beauty" or "natural" claims.

Investors highlighted the brand’s capital-efficient growth and its unique distribution "flywheel" led by doctors. Varun Varma, Principal at Fireside Ventures, noted that the attraction lay in the "rare combination of deep clinical rigor and a trust-led go-to-market." He added that the brand is backed by one of the richest clinical data platforms in Indian dermatology while maintaining high repeat purchase rates.

Long-Term Value

Alka Goel, Founding Partner at Alkemi Growth Capital, emphasized the brand’s focus on "skin of colour," a segment often underserved by global formulations. "With a doctor-led distribution flywheel and a capital-efficient growth model, I see CHOSEN as a compelling platform for long-term value creation," she stated.

The startup’s next phase involves investing in high-impact talent across functions to transition from a niche, professional recommendation brand to a broader science-led powerhouse. As the Indian beauty market becomes more sophisticated, CHOSEN’s bet on "clinical data over celebrity endorsements" will be a key metric to watch. For now, the funding provides the necessary mettle to ensure that their R&D-first approach stays ahead of the curve in a crowded market.
