Regional travel network in India is undergoing a structural shift, with secondary urban corridors and leisure destinations outpacing traditional metropolitan routes in growth rate, according to the latest Uber Intercity Travel Index.
Improved road infrastructure and targeted platform features are encouraging commuters to opt for point-to-point road travel over long weekends and holiday periods, highlighting a growing preference for direct connectivity.
According to the latest Uber Intercity Travel Index, which analyzed aggregated trip data from April to June 2026, established corridors including Mumbai-Pune, Delhi-Agra, Bengaluru-Mysuru, Lucknow-Kanpur, and Ahmedabad-Vadodara continue to record high overall passenger volumes.
However, the highest percentage growth is emerging from regional connections such as Ahmedabad-Vadodara, Delhi-Dehradun, Bengaluru-Mysuru, Delhi-Chandigarh, and Chennai-Puducherry.
What Report Says
The expansion of national expressways and improved road conditions have significantly reduced travel times between non-metro hubs. Summer travel patterns indicate a steady rise in trips toward heritage, pilgrimage, and leisure sites, including Dehradun, Puducherry, Nashik, Aurangabad, Prayagraj, Ajmer, and Udaipur.
"A combination of safer intercity travel options like Uber Intercity along with an expanding and improved road infrastructure is driving road trips across India – not just between major cities, but increasingly across regional corridors and to destinations that offer unique cultural, spiritual and leisure experiences. This edition of the Uber Intercity Travel Index reflects how travel behaviour is evolving, with increased volume of road trips, new emerging intercity routes, and continued demand," said Shiva Shailendran, Director of Revenue and Category Management at Uber India and South Asia.
Long Weekend Trends
Data from the three-month period shows high utilization during statutory holidays and extended weekends, with noticeable demand spikes during the May Day and Bakrid holidays. User activity metrics reveal high frequency among top-tier users, with certain riders logging nearly 30 intercity trips during the quarter, while others covered distances approaching 1,500 kilometers.
To capture market share in areas with lower smartphone penetration, product interventions have been introduced to streamline bookings. Features such as Call2Ride allow commuters to book rides via a dedicated telephone number without accessing the primary mobile application.
Additionally, the option to schedule round trips has addressed driver availability concerns on return journeys. Safety protocol implementations, including continuous trip monitoring, in-app safety hotlines, and route sharing tools, remain central to platform adoption.
