Moj Crosses 500M Downloads, Reports Over 1B Daily Video Plays

Moj 500 million downloads

Moj, a short-video platform operated by Mohalla Tech, has crossed 500 million downloads on the Google Play Store, according to the company. The platform also reports more than 1 billion video plays a day as it expands its short-form video and micro-drama business.

Startup was launched in 2020, Moj currently ranks fourth in the Social Media category on the Google Play Store in India, based on the company information. The platform has built its user base around short videos, regional content and trends across multiple Indian languages.

Moj says it now has more than 3 million creators on its platform. Users spend nearly 300 minutes a month on the app, or around 50 minutes a day, while the company reports that creators collectively earn close to Rs 100 crore annually.

Moj User Engagement

The platform has reported a rise in user engagement since introducing advertising-supported micro dramas last year. According to Moj, daily time spent per user has more than doubled following the launch of the format.

The company says the app now records more than 1 billion daily video plays. It also claims that monthly time spent on Moj is higher than that of most mainstream OTT platforms in India, although it has not provided comparative figures or the methodology used for this assessment.

The growth in viewing time has also become part of the platform advertising strategy. Moj says brands are using its micro-drama formats for advertising, including commerce integrations and branded productions.

Micro Dramas Growth

Moj reported 100% year-on-year revenue growth over the past 12 months, linking the increase partly to its micro-drama advertising business. The company has been offering advertisers formats that combine storytelling with brand placements and commerce features.

The platform is also positioning regional and language-based content as a key part of its offering. Its model allows creators and users to produce and consume short videos in several Indian languages, helping it compete in a market where regional content remains an important part of digital entertainment.

Crossing 500 million downloads is an important milestone for Moj and reflects the trust and engagement of our users across the country.

The company has not disclosed its latest revenue figure, profitability or the number of monthly active users alongside the 500 million-download milestone. The download count on Google Play also does not represent the number of active users.

Moj Creator Network

Moj says its creator community has crossed 3 million. The platform has also reported annual creator earnings of close to Rs 100 crore, indicating the scale of its monetisation activity around content creation.

For advertisers, the company is developing micro dramas as a separate commercial format. These include branded micro dramas and integrations that allow products or services to be incorporated into entertainment content.

Ankush Sachdeva, CEO and co-founder of Mohalla Tech, said the 500 million-download milestone reflects user engagement and the platform focus on stories, creators and trends in local languages and cultural settings.

What is Moj

Moj is a short-video platform launched in 2020 by Mohalla Tech, the technology company co-founded by Ankush Sachdeva, Farid Ahsan and Parth Samthaan. The platform emerged after the ban of several Chinese short-video applications in India and focuses on short-form entertainment, creator content and regional-language videos.

Its business model combines user-generated content with advertising and creator monetisation. More recently, Moj has expanded into episodic micro dramas and related advertising formats, giving brands opportunities to place products and campaigns within short entertainment programmes.

Moj in Social Media

The 500 million-download figure gives Moj a large distribution base on Android, but downloads alone do not establish the size of its active audience. The company figures on daily video plays and time spent point to continued usage, while the reported revenue growth shows increasing commercial activity around the platform.

Moj operates in a crowded Indian social media and entertainment market that includes short-video, video-sharing and OTT platforms. Its focus on regional content, creator participation and micro dramas is becoming an important part of its effort to maintain user attention and attract advertising revenue.
