Noida International Airport Joins the UN Global Compact for Sustainability

Share post:

The Noida International Airport (NIA) officially joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest voluntary corporate sustainability initiative on Tuesday. The move shows NIA’s dedication to following responsible business practices and making a positive impact on society and the environment.

By joining the UNGC, NIA agrees to follow the Ten Principles of the Global Compact, which focus on human rights, fair labor, environmental protection, and fighting corruption. The airport is also supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

What is the UN Global Compact?

The UN Global Compact, which started in 2000, now includes more than 15,000 businesses and 3,000 non-business organizations from over 160 countries. The initiative encourages companies to adopt sustainable practices and take actions that benefit society and the planet. As part of this effort, NIA will work on improving its business operations to meet high standards in areas like human rights, environmental responsibility, and good governance.

Commitment to Sustainability

Christoph Schnellmann, the CEO of Noida International Airport, shared that joining the UN Global Compact is a natural step in the airport’s journey to becoming a sustainable and world-class airport. He said that NIA is proud to be part of this global movement, which promotes responsible business practices. NIA will continue to focus on sustainable practices in its development and daily operations, ensuring that these values remain at the core of the airport’s activities.

As part of its membership, NIA will also provide regular reports to show its progress in areas like environmental management, labor relations, and fighting corruption. The airport aims to achieve net-zero emissions and will use sustainable design principles in its operations. NIA is focused on reducing its environmental impact and has carefully chosen partners and construction teams that share this commitment to sustainability.

Noida International Airport’s Development Plans

The Noida International Airport is set to be a major hub connecting the greater Delhi area and western Uttar Pradesh to cities across India and around the world. The airport is currently under construction, with work progressing well on the runway, passenger terminal, and control tower. NIA is on track to begin commercial operations by the end of April 2025. Recently, several important agreements have been signed, including contracts for ground handling, commercial areas, and maintenance operations. Several airlines have also agreed to start flights from the new airport.

Step Toward Sustainable Development

Noida International Airport’s membership in the UN Global Compact marks a significant milestone in its journey to becoming a global leader in sustainability. With a clear focus on responsible business practices, NIA is well on its way to achieving its goal of being a net-zero emissions airport. As the airport nears its operational launch, its commitment to sustainability will help shape the future of the aviation industry.
