Are you planning to go home for upcoming festive season or thinking of a holiday trip with your family and friends? You’ve probably started packing, gifts for loved ones, items for the journey, maybe even some winter clothes. But wait—before you zip up that suitcase, there’s something important you need to know. Indian Railways has started charging passengers for carrying extra luggage, and this new rule could affect your travel plans. Here is all you need to know about Indian railways new luggage rules:
What’s the New Luggage Rule?
Earlier, people used to carry bags and boxes without much checking. But now, Railways is getting strict. If your luggage is heavier than the allowed limit, you’ll have to pay extra. And if you don’t pay, you might be fined.
Railway staff will now weigh your bags at the station using machines. If your luggage is too heavy or too big, you’ll either need to pay for it or leave some of it behind.
How Much Can You Carry for Free?
Here’s how much luggage you can carry without paying anything:
- First AC: 70 kg + 10 kg (must pay if over 80 kg)
- Second AC: 50 kg + 10 kg (must pay if over 60 kg)
- Third AC/Sleeper: 40 kg + 10 kg (must pay if over 50 kg)
- General/Second Sit: 35 kg + 10 kg (must pay if over 45 kg)
Indian Railways: Fines and Charges
If passengers ignore the rule and carry more than allowed without booking it as luggage, Indian Railways will charge 1.5 times the regular rate. This means the fine could be heavier than the cost of booking in advance.
Interestingly, even lighter bags may still attract charges if they occupy too much space or block the coach pathways. This step is aimed at ensuring passengers do not misuse the limited space inside coaches.

Where Rules Apply
Currently, this system is active in important stations including Prayagraj Junction, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur, Aligarh, Etawah, Subedarganj, Tundla, and Govindpuri. Authorities have confirmed that more stations across the country will soon follow the same process, especially during high-traffic festive months.
With machines in place to weigh bags at platforms, passengers will find it difficult to avoid checks. Railways expects this will bring discipline and prevent overcrowding caused by excessive luggage.
Why Is This Happening?
According to Indian Railways, this initiative is not only about generating revenue but also about passenger comfort and safety. Excess luggage often clutters compartments, makes seating uncomfortable, and in some cases, can even cause accidents during sudden movements of the train.
By restricting oversized bags, Railways wants to ensure smoother travel and a safer environment for passengers. During festivals like Diwali, when trains are packed, controlling luggage volume becomes even more critical.
What Should You Do?
Next time you travel, check your luggage weight before leaving home. If it’s too heavy, either reduce it or book it properly at the station. This way, you’ll avoid fines and travel stress-free.
So, pack smart and travel light. And if you’re carrying sweets for your family or gifts for your kids just make sure they don’t weigh more than your ticket allows.
