Indian Railways Upgrades 23,000 km of Tracks for Faster Trains

Share post:

Indian Railways has achieved a major milestone by upgrading over 23,000 track kilometers (TKM) to support train speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour (kmph). This development marks a significant step towards modernizing the railway network and enhancing travel efficiency.

The upgraded tracks represent nearly one-fifth of India’s railway network. These improvements are supported by advanced safety measures such as modern signaling systems and fencing at vulnerable locations. Additionally, around 54,337 track kilometers have been strengthened to handle speeds of up to 110 kmph.

Freight and Passengers Revenue

Indian Railways reported a four percent increase in earnings between April and December of the current fiscal year (FY25). Revenue from freight operations reached Rs 1.26 lakh crore, while passenger segment earnings rose by six percent, totaling Rs 55,988 crore during the same period.

Freight loading during January to November 2024 recorded a growth of 3.86 percent, with 1,473.05 metric tonnes of goods transported. This underscores the growing demand for efficient freight services across the country.

Infrastructure Development

The government’s focus on infrastructure development is evident from the two percent increase in capital expenditure for FY25, amounting to Rs 1.92 lakh crore. This investment highlights the commitment to improving railway connectivity and reducing travel times for passengers.

The modernization efforts include strengthening tracks to handle high-speed trains, implementing advanced signaling systems for safer operations, and installing fencing to enhance security. These upgrades ensure stability and durability, making the railway network more reliable for both passenger and freight services.

Vande Bharat Express

The Vande Bharat Express, capable of reaching speeds up to 160 kmph, represents a new era in Indian train travel. This high-speed train offers passengers a faster, more comfortable, and premium travel experience, reflecting Indian Railways’ focus on modernization.

To meet peak demand, Indian Railways increased specialized train services by 54 percent compared to the previous year. A total of 57,169 such services were operated, catering to the growing needs of travelers.

Indian Railways is making significant strides in modernizing its network and improving services. The upgrades in track infrastructure, coupled with higher earnings and advanced train services, demonstrate the government’s dedication to enhancing the railway experience for millions of passengers and businesses across the country.
