New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the continuation of the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) with an increased budget of Rs 2,750 crore. The initiative, under NITI Aayog, will run until March 31, 2028, with a broader scope to boost India’s innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem.
Step Towards Viksit Bharat
AIM 2.0 is part of the government’s vision for Viksit Bharat, focusing on enhancing India’s global standing in innovation. Currently ranked 39th on the Global Innovation Index, India is also home to the world’s third-largest startup ecosystem. AIM 2.0 aims to improve global competitiveness by creating better jobs, innovative products, and impactful services.
Achievements of Atal Innovation Mission 1.0
In its first phase, AIM established numerous Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) and Atal Incubation Centres, which played a key role in nurturing young talent and supporting startups. AIM 2.0 will build on these achievements while addressing gaps in the innovation ecosystem.
Initiatives Under Atal Innovation Mission 2.0
The mission will introduce several new programs:
- Language Inclusive Program of Innovation (LIPI): This program will promote innovation in 22 scheduled languages, making entrepreneurship more accessible to non-English speakers. It includes the establishment of 30 Vernacular Innovation Centres in existing incubators.
- The Frontier Programme: Focused on creating customized innovation ecosystems in regions like Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, North Eastern states, and Aspirational Districts, benefiting 15% of the population.
- Human Capital Development and Deeptech Programs: These aim to develop skilled talent and cutting-edge technology solutions.
Strengthening Innovation Ecosystem
Around 2,500 new Atal Tinkering Labs will be established under AIM 2.0. Additionally, four new programs will enhance the ecosystem’s throughput, while two initiatives, including the Industrial Accelerator Program, will ensure high-quality outputs.
With collaboration from central and state governments, industries, academia, and communities, AIM 2.0 aims to foster a sustainable and inclusive innovation environment, ensuring India’s continued growth as a global leader in innovation.
