New Delhi: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the PAN 2.0 project for the Income Tax Department. The project has been allocated a budget of Rs 1,435 crore and aims to transform taxpayer registration services through advanced technology.

Transforming Taxpayer Services

The PAN 2.0 project is part of the government’s Digital India initiative. It focuses on simplifying taxpayer registration by improving accessibility, speeding up services, and enhancing quality. The project introduces eco-friendly processes, reduces costs, ensures consistent data, and strengthens security measures to create a more agile system.

According to a government statement, the project will re-engineer the business processes of PAN and TAN services, offering a better digital experience for taxpayers. The new system will consolidate both core and non-core PAN/TAN activities, providing a single source of truth through improved validation services.

PAN as a Common Identifier

PAN 2.0 aligns with the government’s vision by enabling the use of Permanent Account Numbers (PAN) as a universal identifier for various digital systems within specified government agencies. This innovation supports the broader goals of e-governance and digital transformation across India.

In addition to approving PAN 2.0, the government highlighted robust growth in direct tax collections. From April 1 to November 10 of the current financial year, net direct tax collections, including corporate and personal income taxes, rose by 15.4%, reaching Rs 12.1 lakh crore.

PAN 2.0 Project

The target for the fiscal year, set at Rs 22.07 lakh crore, comprises Rs 10.20 lakh crore from corporate tax and Rs 11.87 lakh crore from personal income and other taxes. The Income Tax Department is optimistic about surpassing this ambitious goal.

The PAN 2.0 project demonstrates the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for efficient governance. By improving taxpayer services and boosting digital integration, the project ensures a seamless experience for users while contributing to India’s growth as a digital economy.
