Star Localmart Buys DusMinute to Scale Indian Retail

Share post:

Star Localmart, the retail venture of the Sanjay Ghodawat Group (SGG), has made a significant move by acquiring Bengaluru-based retail chain DusMinute for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition strengthens the company’s presence in India’s fast-growing retail sector and helps it tap into both regional and hyperlocal markets.

With this deal, Star Localmart’s store count jumps to 170, enhancing its reach in tier-II to tier-VI towns. The company is determined to bring modern supermarket experiences to semi-urban and rural regions, where demand for affordable and convenient retail is rapidly rising.

Plans After Acquisition

The retail arm has already revealed ambitious plans to expand across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Its vision is to build a vast network of 3,000 stores by 2030, aiming for revenues of Rs 5,000 crore within five years. The acquisition of DusMinute is expected to accelerate this growth and strengthen its foothold across southern and western India.

DusMinute’s strength lies in its hyperlocal retail model. With 40 outlets inside gated residential complexes, it combines in-community grocery stores with app-based doorstep delivery of essentials like vegetables, fruits, groceries, and daily household products. This approach directly complements Star Localmart’s larger supermarket model.

What is Star Localmart

Founded in 2020, Star Localmart has quickly emerged as a rising player in India’s retail landscape. Currently, the company operates 130+ stores across 50 towns in Western Maharashtra and Northern Karnataka. Each outlet stocks over 3,000 products from national, regional, and local brands, ensuring accessibility to a wide range of consumers.

The company also emphasizes its contribution to job creation and skill development. By providing training and employment opportunities, Star Localmart positions itself as not just a retail player but also a driver of local community development.

DusMinute’s Growth Story

Before the acquisition, DusMinute had successfully raised Rs 11.5 crore in July 2023 through a bridge funding round led by Inflection Point Ventures. The round also saw participation from banker Bandana Kankani, the Indian Angel Network, and other investors.

The Bengaluru-based chain carved its space by bringing convenience to gated communities, offering both physical stores and a strong digital presence. Its hyperlocal delivery system quickly won consumer trust and became a go-to option for everyday needs in urban neighborhoods.

Building Retail Synergy

The combination of Star Localmart’s regional supermarket scale with DusMinute’s hyperlocal expertise creates a synergy that could redefine retail experiences for millions of Indian consumers. Together, they aim to deepen consumer connections, blend affordability with convenience, and position themselves as strong competitors in the highly competitive retail market.

As the demand for organized retail grows across India’s smaller towns and gated communities, the acquisition marks a strategic step for Star Localmart. By uniting regional scale with local presence, the company is working towards shaping the future of modern retail in India.
