In a strong move following increased tensions with Pakistan, the Government of India has banned all Pakistan-origin content on OTT platforms, streaming services, and digital intermediaries. The decision was announced on Thursday after the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which was linked to Pakistan-supported terrorist groups. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an advisory to all media platforms in India, asking them to immediately remove web series, movies, songs, podcasts, and any other digital content that originates from Pakistan.
India Blocks Pakistan Web Series and Movies
The advisory stated that several recent terror incidents in India had confirmed connections with actors based in Pakistan. One of the most recent and tragic events occurred on April 22 in Pahalgam, where terrorists killed 26 people, including Indian civilians and a Nepali national. The advisory emphasized that the removal of Pakistan-origin content was being done in the interest of national security. The ban applies to both paid and free streaming services that operate in India.
Pahalgam Attack Sparks Strong Response
After the Pahalgam terror attack, India responded with a carefully planned military operation targeting nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. These strikes were carried out using precision missiles and avoided military installations in Pakistan, showcasing India’s intent to avoid escalation while delivering a strong message. The strikes were launched from Indian airspace and were focused solely on terrorist infrastructure. In response, Pakistan has warned that it will retaliate at a time of its choosing.
India Suspends Indus Waters Treaty
As part of a broader diplomatic move, India has also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 for the first time in history. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the suspension would stay in place until Pakistan takes solid and irreversible steps to stop supporting terrorism. Cross-border trade has been halted, and the Integrated Check Post at Attari has been shut down.
India Cuts Diplomatic Ties with Pakistan
In another strong move, New Delhi has ordered the departure of all Pakistani Defence, Military, Naval, and Air advisors based at its High Commission in Delhi. At the same time, India has also recalled its own military attachés from Islamabad. These actions reflect the deepening strain in diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Government Strengthens National Security
By banning Pakistan-origin digital content, the Indian government aims to prevent the spread of misinformation, propaganda, and any influence that could pose a threat to national security. This move is part of a larger strategy to tighten control over cross-border interactions and protect Indian citizens from external threats, both physical and digital.
