Jindal Stainless Supplies Steel for Vande Bharat Sleeper Coaches

Share post:

Jindal Stainless, one of India’s leading stainless steel manufacturers, has supplied high-strength steel for the new Vande Bharat sleeper coaches. These coaches, designed for long-distance travel, were recently unveiled by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in Bengaluru. They are specially built for overnight journeys, covering distances between 800 to 1,200 kilometers. The coaches are manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML).

Superior Material for Durability and Safety

The sleeper coaches are made using high-quality tempered 301LN austenitic stainless steel, which offers superior strength and durability. This type of steel is known for its excellent resistance to corrosion, making it ideal for long-lasting use. Additionally, the material provides enhanced safety features, such as advanced protection against fire and accidents. These benefits make the coaches safer for passengers and reduce maintenance costs over time.

Jindal Stainless’ Role in Innovation

Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, expressed pride in contributing to this innovative project. He highlighted that the use of 301LN austenitic stainless steel helps reduce the weight of each coach by around two tonnes. This weight reduction improves energy efficiency and lowers the carbon footprint, making the trains more environmentally friendly. He also noted that the new sleeper coaches reflect the Indian Railways’ commitment to safety, comfort, and sustainability.

The first batch of coaches is expected to be ready for dispatch from BEML’s Bengaluru facility by September 20, 2024, with the official launch scheduled for December 2024.

Long Partnership with Indian Railways

Jindal Stainless has been a trusted partner of Indian Railways since 1998. The company has supplied stainless steel for many major railway projects, including the Vande Metro, Kolkata’s underwater metro, the country’s first regional rapid transit system (RRTS), and the Mumbai metro. Jindal Stainless continues to support India’s railway infrastructure with high-quality materials, solidifying its reputation as a leader in stainless steel solutions.
