In a major step toward boosting green energy in India, Japan-based Sojitz Corporation has partnered with GPS Renewables and Indian Oil Corporation. This partnership will focus on the production and supply of biomethane, a clean and sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Sojitz has officially invested in the joint venture company IOC GPS Renewables Pvt. Ltd. (IGRPL), which will build and operate biomethane plants across India.
Under this partnership, IGRPL plans to set up 30 biomethane plants by the financial year 2026–2027. Together, these plants are expected to produce around 160,000 tons of biomethane annually. The total project investment is over USD 400 million. Biomethane is produced from agricultural waste and is a purified form of biogas. It is known for being eco-friendly, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and avoid open burning of crop residues.
Sojitz Corporation: Clean Energy Partnership
This move marks Sojitz Corporation’s first step into India’s biomethane market as part of its Green Transformation (GX) strategy. Sojitz is also creating a dedicated GX team to explore further clean energy projects. A spokesperson from Sojitz mentioned that this investment shows their long-term commitment to India’s renewable future. By investing in biomethane, the company aims to support growing energy needs while reducing pollution.
Mainak Chakraborty, CEO and Co-founder of GPS Renewables, stated that the collaboration with Sojitz will help India reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. He stressed the importance of using biofuels to meet rising energy demand and to support a cleaner environment. The venture also aligns with the global push for a circular economy by reusing agricultural waste for energy.
Indian Oil and GPS Provide Expertise
This joint venture brings together strong partners. GPS Renewables offers deep technical knowledge in bioenergy, while Indian Oil Corporation brings a powerful distribution network. Sojitz adds global experience in renewable energy projects. Together, they aim to create a strong and scalable model for clean energy production in India.
While this collaboration mainly focuses on India, Sojitz has also hinted at expanding biomethane opportunities internationally using GPS Renewables’ technology. This global outlook further strengthens the partnership’s value in the clean energy sector. With this agreement, India takes a big leap toward cleaner fuel alternatives and a sustainable future.
