India Makes Global Progress in 6G Patent Filings

Share post:

After the quick and successful rollout of 5G technology across the nation, India is now focusing on 6G and is making significant progress. The country has moved into the top six nations globally for filing 6G patents, marking a big achievement in advanced technology research.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a clear vision for India to be a leader in the design, development, and deployment of 6G by 2030. The government has introduced the ‘Bharat 6G Vision’, which aims to make India a global contributor to this new technology. Under this vision, over 470 proposals for research on the 6G ecosystem are being reviewed. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has already funded two next-generation testbeds to support the growth of 6G research in the country.

Ambitious 6G Patent Goals

A government panel has set ambitious targets for India’s 6G efforts. India aims to secure a 10% share of all 6G patents globally within the next three years. The country also hopes to contribute one-sixth of the total global standards for 6G technology. To achieve these goals, several initiatives have been launched, including the ‘Bharat 6G Alliance’, which offers patent and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) support along with testbed commissioning.

Bharat 6G Vision, 6G research

Experts believe that to become a deep-tech leader, India must expand both wireline and intelligent wireless broadband networks. Reliable and fast internet connectivity is critical for driving 6G research and deployment in the country.

World Telecom Standardisation Assembly 2024

India will be hosting the World Telecom Standardisation Assembly (WTSA 2024) from October 14-24, 2024, in New Delhi. This is the first time in the 150-year history of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) that such an event will be held in India. More than 190 countries will be participating.

This event provides a platform for India to influence the global telecom industry and prepare for the next advancements like 6G. The DoT has also initiated WTSA 2024 Outreach Sessions in cities like Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. These sessions are designed to offer students a chance to engage with industry experts and enhance their knowledge of telecom technologies.
