Nvidia co-founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, has announced a major partnership with Reliance Industries to develop AI infrastructure in India. The announcement was made during the Nvidia AI Summit 2024 in a conversation between Huang and Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries. This collaboration aims to strengthen India’s position in the AI-driven economy as the country’s AI market is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.
India’s Expanding AI Market
India’s AI market, valued at USD 6.26 billion in 2024, is projected to reach USD 17 billion by 2027, with a growth rate of 25-35% per year. Global tech companies are eager to invest in India as the demand for AI-powered services continues to rise. Huang and Ambani highlighted that India’s large population and talented workforce are key drivers of this growth.
India’s Tech Transformation
Ambani emphasized India’s rapid transformation in the tech sector, particularly in digital infrastructure. Reliance’s telecom arm, Jio, has played a crucial role in making India the largest data provider globally, surpassing major international companies like AT&T and Verizon. Jio has delivered 16 exabytes of data this year alone, and India’s data costs are now the lowest in the world, making high-speed internet accessible to millions.
Building AI Infrastructure
As part of the partnership, Ambani revealed that Reliance is constructing a 1-gigawatt AI infrastructure in Jamnagar, which will be powered by green energy. This facility will be essential for processing the large amounts of data required to power AI technologies, and it has the potential to expand to multiple gigawatts in the future.
Nvidia’s AI Developments in India
Nvidia’s CEO, Huang, also shared an inspiring interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been a strong supporter of AI development in India. Modi emphasized that India should focus on using its own data and talent to create intelligence, rather than exporting resources and importing technology. This forward-thinking approach is positioning India as a key player in the global AI landscape.
At the summit, Nvidia also launched a new AI model called Nemotron-4-Mini-Hindi-4B, designed to support the Hindi language. This model can run on any Nvidia GPU-accelerated system and is expected to enhance AI services in India, particularly for companies like Tech Mahindra, which will use it to create solutions for Hindi and its many dialects.
