Hyundai Motor Group’s Executive Chair, Euisun Chung, has hinted at a possible collaboration with Japan’s Toyota Motor in the field of hydrogen-powered mobility. Speaking at the 2024 World Rally Championship (WRC) in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, Chung confirmed that discussions between the two automakers are ongoing.
“Hyundai and Toyota are exploring ways to collaborate effectively on hydrogen technologies,” Chung said during an interaction with reporters at the Toyota Stadium.
Meeting Between Hyundai-Toyota
This revelation comes after a meeting between Chung and Toyota’s Chairman, Akio Toyoda, at the WRC event. It was their second meeting in less than a month, sparking speculation about potential cooperation. Previously, the two leaders met in South Korea during a joint racing event organized by the automakers.
This is the first time Chung has openly mentioned the possibility of a partnership on hydrogen mobility, a move that could reshape the future of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEVs).
History of Hydrogen Innovation
Hyundai has been a pioneer in hydrogen technology, starting its research in 1998. In 2000, the company introduced its first hydrogen vehicle in collaboration with the U.S.-based fuel cell company, UTC Power. Currently, Hyundai sells the Nexo, a passenger hydrogen FCEV, which competes with Toyota’s Mirai in the global market.
Recently, Hyundai unveiled its new hydrogen concept model, Initium, highlighting its commitment to advancing FCEV technology.
Vision for Hydrogen Mobility
If the collaboration moves forward, it could combine Hyundai’s long-standing expertise in hydrogen technology with Toyota’s advancements in fuel cell systems. Such a partnership could accelerate the adoption of hydrogen-powered mobility worldwide.
Hyundai Celebrates Victory at WRC 2024
At the WRC 2024, Hyundai’s team driver, Thierry Neuville, claimed the drivers’ championship title, while Toyota secured the manufacturers’ championship. Chung expressed pride in the team’s performance and praised Neuville’s achievement.
“This victory inspires us to continue our efforts in research and development with even greater passion and dedication,” said Chung.
A Promising Future for Hydrogen Cars As Hyundai and Toyota explore cooperation, the potential for innovation in hydrogen-powered mobility looks brighter than ever. A joint effort could lead to significant breakthroughs in sustainable transportation technologies, benefiting both automakers and the global environment.
