DS Group Earns ‘Water Positive’ Certification from GRIHA

Share post:

The Dharampal Satyapal Group (DS Group) has been officially certified as Water Positive by the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA), a joint initiative of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and TERI. This recognition places DS Group among a select few Indian companies that have achieved measurable success in sustainable water management.

The certification reflects a Water Positivity Index of 1.80, confirming that DS Group replenishes significantly more water than it consumes. The recognition comes after a two-and-a-half-year comprehensive water audit conducted across 30 business sites spread throughout India.

DS Group Water Initiative

Through sustained efforts in water conservation, DS Group has created a water storage potential of over 66 lakh kilolitres. The company’s sustainability framework integrates rainwater harvesting systems, groundwater recharge wells, wastewater reuse mechanisms, and water-saving infrastructure across its operations.

These initiatives have helped reduce freshwater dependency, enhance local water security, and improve the ecological balance in communities surrounding DS Group’s facilities. The company’s strategy blends business efficiency with environmental responsibility, setting a benchmark for corporate stewardship in resource conservation.

Aligning Business with Sustainability

The certification highlights DS Group’s integrated approach to sustainability, where operational efficiency meets community-driven environmental action. The company’s business units — including mouth fresheners, foods, beverages, hospitality, and agriculture — have collectively implemented water efficiency measures that reflect the brand’s long-term environmental vision.

Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairman of DS Group, emphasized the urgency of water conservation, noting that global water demand could exceed supply by nearly 40% by 2030. He said, “At DS Group, we see sustainability not as a one-time initiative but as a continuing responsibility. Our focus remains on efficiency, conservation, and replenishment — principles that align with global dialogues such as those at COP30.”

Setting New Industry Standards

According to Kumar, the group’s sustainability initiatives stem from its guiding philosophy — “Create What is Worth Creating” — a vision that balances innovation with accountability. Under this approach, DS Group has steadily transitioned toward eco-resilient operations and community-oriented water programs.

DS Group’s recognition is a milestone under our Decarbonizing Habitat Programme. The certification underscores how sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand. DS leadership demonstrates that environmental responsibility can coexist with growth.

Empowering Collective Participation

DS Group’s water stewardship initiative brings together employees, suppliers, and consumers to promote responsible water use and conservation. The company continues to advocate for community collaboration, encouraging behavioral change through awareness and active participation in its sustainability programs.

Beyond water management, the group’s broader sustainability roadmap includes initiatives in livelihood enhancement, energy efficiency, agricultural development, and community welfare. By aligning measurable sustainability outcomes with business operations, DS Group continues to contribute to India’s environmental resilience and green growth goals.

The Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) was established in 2007 through a collaboration between the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). GRIHA provides a standardized framework to assess the environmental impact of buildings and operations throughout their lifecycle. Recognized in India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the UNFCCC, GRIHA promotes energy efficiency, resource conservation, and eco-friendly design practices across industries and infrastructure projects.
