Women SHGs Transform Rural Economy in Himachal Pradesh

Share post:

Women in Himachal Pradesh are redefining rural livelihoods through Self-Help Groups (SHGs) supported by the National Rural Employment Mission. With over 43,000 SHGs comprising 4 lakh women across the state, these groups are creating waves by selling organic and traditional products at fairs like the Saras Fair, both within and outside Himachal Pradesh.

The SHGs have become a lifeline for rural women, enabling them to earn steady incomes and gain self-confidence. “Our mission is to empower rural women and make them self-reliant,” said Mohit Kanwar, Mission Executive of the Himachal Rural Employment Mission. He added that SHG members earn about Rs 1 lakh annually, transforming lives across the state.

From Homemakers to Entrepreneurs

Many women involved in SHGs were previously confined to their homes, focused solely on domestic duties. Now, they actively participate in fairs, confidently interacting with customers and selling their products. Four women have even earned the title “Lakhpati Didi,” a recognition for their entrepreneurial success. Two of these women were recently honored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Our traditional products like organic turmeric, maize flour, and papaya seeds are highly sought after. People are turning to organic items, and this has greatly boosted our sales,” said Usha Dhiman, a “Lakhpati Didi” from Dehra in Kangra district. Usha, who leads a group of 10 women, highlighted how their organic produce, such as maize priced at Rs 4,000 per quintal, is in high demand.

Promoting Organic Living

Another successful SHG member, Geeta from Naggar in Kullu district, shared her group’s focus on traditional and medicinal plants. These forgotten practices are being revived, with products like walnut and apricot oil gaining popularity for their nutritional and medicinal benefits. “We are getting excellent returns from selling these products at fairs and local markets,” Geeta said.

The SHGs are not just about business; they are also advocating for healthier lifestyles. “People today are consuming harmful chemicals through fertilizers and sprays. Our organic products offer a safer and healthier alternative,” Usha explained. Her group also produces turmeric, amla jam, and murabba, utilizing six kanals of farmland for cultivation.

Financial Independence

The success of these SHGs has brought financial independence and boosted the confidence of rural women. The transformation is evident in their participation at fairs and their ability to manage businesses independently. The initiative has not only improved rural incomes but also brought recognition to traditional and organic products from Himachal Pradesh.

Women SHGs in Himachal Pradesh are setting an example of how rural economies can thrive through community-driven efforts. By focusing on organic farming, traditional products, and self-reliance, these groups are uplifting entire communities and making a significant impact on the state’s economy. The journey of these women from homemakers to entrepreneurs is truly inspiring.
