Over 73,000 Startups in India Have Women Directors

Share post:

India is witnessing a remarkable shift in its startup ecosystem, with 73,151 startups now having women directors. This impressive number represents nearly half of the 1,52,139 startups supported by the Indian government. The increasing presence of women in leadership roles highlights their essential contribution to innovation and economic growth in the country.

Support for Women Entrepreneurs

The Indian government has introduced several schemes to promote women-led startups. These initiatives aim to provide financial support, mentorship, and resources to empower women entrepreneurs. Through Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), Rs 3,107 crore has been invested in 149 women-led startups.

Additionally, the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme (SISFS) has approved Rs 227.12 crore in funding for 1,278 women-led startups since its inception in April 2021. The Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS), launched in April 2023, has guaranteed Rs 24.6 crore in loans for women-led ventures, further boosting their financial confidence.

Startup India Initiative

The Startup India Initiative, introduced in 2016 by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), has transformed India’s entrepreneurial landscape. Special measures, such as a 10% allocation under the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS), have been reserved exclusively for women-led startups. Additionally, women-led AIFs are eligible for a higher management fee of 0.1% per annum, encouraging more women to enter the startup ecosystem.

To further empower women entrepreneurs, the government organizes Women Capacity Development Programme (WING) workshops. These sessions provide a platform for sharing best practices, overcoming challenges, and understanding successful business models. Such initiatives aim to create a supportive environment where women-led startups can thrive.

Women Entrepreneurs

Women-led startups are flourishing across more than 600 districts in India, with more than half of these startups being run by women. This growth signifies the resilience and vision of women entrepreneurs, who are transforming industries and breaking barriers with their innovative ideas.

The rise of women-led startups in India reflects a brighter, more inclusive future for the country’s economy. With continued government support and the dedication of women entrepreneurs, India’s startup ecosystem is set to reach new heights, fostering innovation and driving economic growth.
