A recent report by NeoGrowth has shed light on the financial discipline and independence of women entrepreneurs in India. According to the study, 93% of women business owners actively manage their finances, maintain meticulous records, and ensure timely payments, highlighting their strong financial acumen.

Additionally, 81% of women entrepreneurs operate independently, making key business decisions without external reliance. The trend is particularly evident among women above 40 years of age, who have developed greater confidence and business expertise over time.

Dr. Manjari Chaturvedi, CEO of Healthy Aging India, emphasizes the importance of financial responsibility, especially in the non-profit sector. She explains, “For a non-profit entity, finance is a tricky terrain as funds are dependent on donors, whether corporates, PSUs, or individuals. So, funds have to be very responsibly allocated, ensuring every rupee is accounted for diligently. Transparency and efficiency are key to maximizing impact for beneficiaries. Consequently, I have learned to run a highly efficient administration.”

Young Women Entrepreneurs Seek Support

While most women entrepreneurs manage businesses independently, the report found that younger women, particularly those in the 21-30 age group, often seek guidance from family and peer networks. This suggests that while financial independence is a common trait, early-stage entrepreneurs value support as they build their ventures.

Akanksha Chauhan, Founder & CEO of Rolling Studios, reflects on her entrepreneurial journey, saying, “As I sit down to reflect on my journey, I am filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment. It’s just a small step, but my vision is wide. From being a news anchor/reporter on national TV channels like Zee News and Bharat Express to starting my own production house and working on high-profile government events and projects, my path has been nothing short of transformative.”

Self-Motivation Drives Business Growth

One of the most notable findings of the report is that nearly 70% of women entrepreneurs started their businesses out of self-motivation and aspiration, rather than financial necessity. Only 22% of women entrepreneurs started due to financial challenges, while 12% took over family businesses.

This reflects the growing ambition of women business owners in India, who are choosing entrepreneurship to achieve professional growth, financial independence, and long-term success.

Namrata Narayan, Founder of Maitreyi Micro Products, resonates with the report’s findings, stating, “I completely agree with the report because when I initiated my project, I faced a lot of challenges—day-to-day problems like handling a team, work distribution, management, production, and more. But all these issues made me stronger, more decisive, and more confident. Women are always passionate about responsibilities; they are great at work management and even taking risks. It’s not just me—I’ve observed that women employees in my organization are more sincere and honest in performing their assignments. Women today are not just confined to kitchens; they are masters of their fields, managing both family and professional relationships smartly.”

Women Entrepreneurs Creating Impact

Women entrepreneurs are making a significant impact, not just in business but also in society. According to the report, 98% of women business owners believe their businesses have positively influenced their families, with benefits such as:

  • 61% reporting an improved standard of living.
  • 54% gaining more confidence and financial independence.

Beyond their families, these businesswomen are also empowering other women by creating job opportunities, inspiring employees to start their own ventures, and acting as role models for young girls pursuing education and careers.

The study highlights a positive shift in society’s perception of women-led businesses, with 90% of women entrepreneurs stating that they now receive greater respect and recognition. Cities like Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad have been particularly supportive, fostering an environment that encourages women-led businesses to thrive.

It is heartening to witness how women in India are exploring business ownership and driving inclusive growth like never before. Women-led businesses are not just creating economic value but also redefining leadership by fostering workplace empathy, meticulous business management, and a positive work culture.

As they continue to integrate technology, foster innovation, and empower their communities, their role in economic and social development will only grow stronger in the years to come.
