Share post:

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal has announced that his recent job posting for the Chief of Staff role has drawn over 10,000 applications. This job offer has sparked wide debate due to its unconventional terms: no salary for the first year and a Rs 20 lakh fee in the form of a donation.

The job listing calls for applicants with specific traits, including:

  • A hunger to succeed.
  • Strong common sense.
  • Empathy.
  • A learning mindset.
  • Exceptional communication skills.

Surprisingly, the role doesn’t require extensive experience but emphasizes a zero entitlement attitude. The job description states that the position involves working on everything needed to build Zomato’s future, including its ventures like Blinkit, Hyperpure, and Feeding India.

The Opportunity Fee

Explaining the unusual fee structure, Goyal mentioned that the Rs 20 lakh opportunity fee is designed to attract candidates focused on personal and professional growth over monetary benefits. While no salary is offered during the first year, a competitive package exceeding Rs 50 lakh is promised from the second year onward.

Goyal compared the role to gaining 10x the knowledge of a top management program, highlighting the value of working closely with him and other leaders in the tech industry.

Mixed Social Media Reactions

The job post has received mixed reactions. Some users criticized the offer, calling it unethical or potentially illegal under the Minimum Wages Act, 1948. Others defended it, arguing that Zomato must have carefully considered the implications before launching such a bold initiative.

One online user humorously remarked, “The conditions sound like a job scam. Pay $$$ to get a high-paying role!” Another argued, “You think a large public company hasn’t evaluated all angles? Clearly, this is a strategic move.”

Despite the controversies, Zomato’s job offer has undeniably captured the attention of professionals. By focusing on growth and learning, the company has created an opportunity that appeals to those prioritizing long-term career advancement over immediate financial gain.
