Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp banned more than 99 lakh accounts in India during January 2025, according to its monthly compliance report. This large-scale ban is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to make the platform safer by preventing spam, fraud, and misuse. With millions of people in India using WhatsApp every day, the company faces challenges in ensuring that communication remains secure and trustworthy.
How WhatsApp Detects and Bans Accounts
WhatsApp uses an advanced system to identify and remove suspicious accounts. The system looks for unusual behavior, including sending bulk messages or spam. Out of the 99 lakh accounts banned in January, around 13 lakh were removed automatically, even before users complained. This proactive approach allows WhatsApp to catch and remove problem accounts quickly.
In addition to automatic bans, WhatsApp also reviews complaints from users. During the same period, it received 9,474 complaints from people in India. These complaints were related to issues like spam, harassment, and account misuse. After carefully checking each case, the platform took action on 239 accounts, banning some and reinstating others if the complaints turned out to be invalid.
Why Accounts Are Banned
WhatsApp bans accounts for several reasons. Some users are banned for sending large numbers of unwanted or automated messages, while others are removed for sharing false information or using unauthorized contact lists. The platform is strict about these rules because such actions can harm the user experience and spread misinformation.
The bans are enforced under India’s Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. These rules require platforms like WhatsApp to take strong action against users who break their guidelines.
Monitoring at Every Stage
To keep the platform safe, WhatsApp monitors accounts at three different stages. First, it checks accounts when users register. Second, it looks at the messages being sent to see if they follow the platform’s guidelines. Finally, it monitors feedback from users, such as reports and blocks, to identify and investigate problem accounts.
WhatsApp also has a team of experts who review cases that require closer attention. This team works to improve the platform’s detection system and make sure that bans are fair and effective.
