Perplexity CEO Offers AI Help to NYT During Tech Strike

Share post:

Aravind Srinivas, the CEO of Perplexity, an AI search company, recently offered support to the New York Times (NYT) during a challenging time. His proposal came shortly after the NYT Tech Guild, which represents NYT’s tech employees, began a strike, aiming for better working conditions. Srinivas’s offer, shared on social media, came just two days before the U.S. presidential election, a crucial time for NYT’s news coverage. His proposal sparked an intense online reaction, especially from those who felt it undermined the Guild’s efforts.

NYT Tech Workers’ Demands

The NYT Tech Guild, which includes NYT’s software support and data analysis teams, began its strike on November 4. After several unsuccessful negotiations with NYT management, the workers made their concerns public. The Guild is requesting a 2.5% annual wage increase, a limit of two in-office days per week, and additional protections against layoffs. They also want more flexible remote work options. The Guild shared its frustration on social media, claiming NYT has not offered a fair contract, and accusing management of “unfair labor practices.”

Kathy Zhang, a representative of the Guild, stated that the strike shows the workforce’s commitment to fair treatment and respect, especially during a period when their roles are critical for NYT’s operations.

Publisher Criticizes Strike Timing

AG Sulzberger, NYT’s publisher, criticized the timing of the strike. He expressed concern, calling it “troubling” since NYT’s election coverage plays a critical role in providing news to millions of readers. Sulzberger emphasized the importance of NYT’s journalism during the election, suggesting that the strike might disrupt this essential public service. This made the timing of Srinivas’s offer especially significant, as he offered to step in just before Election Day.

Srinivas Offers AI Backup

Following Sulzberger’s comments, Max Tani, a media editor, posted about the issue online. Srinivas responded, offering Perplexity’s assistance to help NYT keep its coverage running smoothly. He posted, “Perplexity is on standby to help ensure your essential coverage is available to all through the election. DM me anytime.” Srinivas later clarified that his offer wasn’t meant to replace NYT’s tech workers but to offer extra support during what would be a high-traffic period.

In a follow-up post, Srinivas stated, “It would be bad for the country if NYT were down on Election Day. Everyone should pitch in to help.” However, his offer remains controversial, as many believe it could undermine the tech workers’ efforts to secure a fair contract.

Historic Strike by NYT Tech Guild

This strike is a historic event for the NewsGuild, marking the first time in 60 years that the Guild has taken such action during a presidential election. The strike is expected to continue through the election period, highlighting the Guild’s commitment to workplace rights, even during such an important time for journalism.
