Govt Launches Rs 277 Crore Initiative to Support 5 Lakh MSMEs

The Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME), in partnership with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), has introduced the MSME Trade Enablement and Marketing (TEAM) initiative. With a budget of Rs 277.35 crore over three years, this program aims to empower small businesses and help them succeed in the digital economy.

Boost for MSMEs and Women Entrepreneurs

The MSME TEAM initiative focuses on onboarding 5 lakh micro, small, and medium enterprises onto the ONDC platform. Notably, 50% of these businesses will be led by women, providing them with tools and resources to expand their market reach and thrive in the digital era.

T Koshy, MD and CEO of ONDC, said, “This initiative is a chance to empower small businesses by connecting them to the ONDC network. It creates a level playing field, enabling them to scale and succeed.”

Simplifying Digital Commerce for MSMEs

The initiative will help MSMEs set up digital storefronts, integrate payment systems, and access logistics support. By reducing operational challenges, it enables businesses to reach more customers and increase their market presence.

Additionally, the program focuses on formalizing business operations and creating digital transaction histories. This will enhance the credibility and trustworthiness of MSMEs, making them more competitive in the marketplace.

Workshops for MSMEs in Tier 2 and 3 Cities

Over 150 workshops will be organized across Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, targeting key MSME clusters. These workshops will give special attention to women-led and SC/ST-led enterprises. MSMEs can register for these workshops through a dedicated portal, which will also offer financing options and grievance support.

“This is the right time for Indian startups to use ONDC to tap into the potential of India’s MSME ecosystem,” said Koshy.

To make the transition to digital commerce easier, financial assistance will be provided to ‘Seller Network Participants.’ This support includes help with catalog creation, account management, and operations, ensuring that small businesses have the resources they need to succeed in the digital space.

Opportunities for Startups and Technology Providers

The MSME TEAM initiative is also a chance for Indian startups and technology enablers to create innovative solutions for MSMEs. ONDC, a network of over 200 apps, including buyer and seller apps, provides a platform for startups to develop unique value propositions and support small businesses.

With the launch of the MSME TEAM initiative, the government is taking a significant step towards empowering small businesses and boosting the digital economy. By providing tools, resources, and financial support, the program aims to help MSMEs thrive in a competitive marketplace and contribute to India’s economic growth.
