Kolkata: After a gap of more than five years, IndiGo has restarted direct air services between Kolkata and Guangzhou, marking a major milestone in India–China aviation links. The airline announced the resumption of daily non-stop flights on Monday, reconnecting the two major cities that serve as gateways to trade and tourism.

The inaugural flight, operated with an Airbus A320, took off from Kolkata at around 10 pm (IST) on Sunday and landed in Guangzhou early the next morning. The return flight reached Kolkata at approximately 7.50 am (IST), marking the official revival of this crucial international route.

With this launch, IndiGo has become the first Indian carrier to resume daily non-stop services between the two countries. The airline said this move highlights its commitment to rebuilding international air connectivity and supporting India’s global business ecosystem.

“This is more than just a flight route; it’s a bridge between two dynamic economies,” said Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo. “The resumption of the Kolkata–Guangzhou route opens doors for Chinese travellers and investors to experience India’s rich culture and vibrant markets, while also creating new opportunities for Indian businesses.”

Elbers added that the new route will play a vital role in enhancing bilateral ties, especially in trade, tourism, and education. He noted that the expansion of air connectivity between India and China will support MSMEs, enable cross-border collaborations, and boost passenger movement between key commercial hubs.

The airline emphasized that the service is part of its broader plan to improve international connectivity and stimulate economic cooperation across Asia. The route is also expected to benefit professionals and students who rely on regular travel between the two nations.

IndiGo Expansion to New Routes

In addition to the Kolkata–Guangzhou service, IndiGo has announced that it will begin Delhi–Guangzhou flights starting November 10, further expanding its presence in the Chinese market. This move will make IndiGo one of the few airlines offering direct connectivity from two major Indian metros to southern China.

Industry analysts believe these steps will help re-establish vital links that were disrupted during the pandemic and geopolitical tensions. Regular air connectivity is seen as essential for restoring business confidence, encouraging tourism, and facilitating cultural exchange between the two Asian powerhouses.

Direct flights between India and China had been operational until early 2020, when they were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the suspension, both Indian and Chinese airlines operated several weekly flights connecting major cities.

The services remained halted for years, largely due to border tensions in eastern Ladakh and travel restrictions. However, following recent diplomatic engagements and improving bilateral dialogues, both governments agreed to restart direct flights, signaling a positive step toward normalization of ties.

India–China Direct Flights

The resumption of the Kolkata–Guangzhou route is part of a gradual reopening of India–China Direct Flights that aims to strengthen economic and cultural exchanges. Guangzhou, known as one of China’s largest commercial hubs, plays a significant role in India’s trade and supply chain ecosystem.

With India emerging as a strong player in manufacturing and digital services, the return of direct air links is expected to facilitate smoother business travel and faster cargo movement. The move also offers greater convenience to Indian students studying in China and professionals working across industries like healthcare, education, and technology.

The resumption of the Kolkata–Guangzhou route opens doors for Chinese travellers and investors to experience India’s rich culture and vibrant markets, while also creating new opportunities for Indian businesses.

As travel demand continues to rise post-pandemic, IndiGo’s initiative marks a significant milestone in restoring trust and connectivity between two of Asia’s most influential economies. The daily flights are expected to not only improve accessibility but also pave the way for more partnerships and opportunities on both sides.

Aviation experts believe IndiGo’s proactive move will set the tone for more airlines to restart India–China routes in the coming months. The airline’s growing international footprint reflects its vision to position India as a global aviation hub while offering passengers affordable and reliable options for international travel.

By reintroducing the Kolkata–Guangzhou service and preparing for the Delhi–Guangzhou route, IndiGo is helping rebuild a crucial bridge between India and China—one that connects markets, cultures, and communities in a post-pandemic world eager for renewal and cooperation.
