Global AI research company Anthropic, known for creating the powerful Claude AI model, is expanding to India with plans to open its first local office in Bengaluru in early 2026. The move marks a major step in the company’s global growth strategy and reflects its commitment to building responsible AI systems that align with India’s digital and economic goals.
Anthropic’s Co-Founder and CEO, Dario Amodei, who is visiting India this week, said the expansion is driven by India’s deep pool of tech talent and its government’s focus on making AI benefits accessible to all. “There is deep alignment between the challenges India is tackling and our mission as a company,” said Amodei. “From multilingual deployment to governance frameworks, India’s AI ecosystem will play a key role in shaping the global future of artificial intelligence.”
Anthropic First Office
The company’s upcoming Bengaluru office will serve as the hub for developing AI tailored to India’s diverse needs. Bengaluru was chosen for its strong engineering base and thriving enterprise ecosystem, making it an ideal launchpad for Anthropic’s India operations.
This will be Anthropic’s second base in the Indo-Pacific region, following Tokyo, Japan. The company plans to expand further across Asia later this year, reinforcing its focus on building local partnerships and region-specific AI solutions.
Building India’s AI Ecosystem
Anthropic’s plans for India rest on three main goals — supporting entrepreneurs to build globally competitive companies, applying AI for social good in sectors such as education, agriculture, and healthcare, and collaborating with Indian enterprises and startups through strategic partnerships.
Paul Smith, Anthropic’s Chief Commercial Officer, said, “Our expansion comes at a pivotal time when Indian enterprises and startups are seeking AI models they can trust. India’s innovation ecosystem — from vibrant developer communities to large enterprises — is creating solutions that impact millions globally.”
Claude’s Growing Presence
Indian users already rank second globally in Claude usage, behind only the U.S. According to Anthropic’s Economic Index, most Indian users rely on Claude for technical tasks such as mobile UI design, web debugging, and coding assistance — showing how India’s developer community is embracing AI tools.
Anthropic also shared that its business adoption is rising quickly in India. Companies such as Emergent, an AI-powered coding platform, are integrating Claude to simplify app-building processes for Indian developers. Today, Anthropic serves over 300,000 businesses worldwide, with nearly 80 percent of consumer usage coming from outside the United States.
Investing in Indic Languages
To strengthen accessibility, Anthropic is investing heavily in Indic language support. Claude already supports major Indian languages, and the company plans to launch enhanced Hindi capabilities soon. Work is also underway to expand support for Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Punjabi, Malayalam, and Urdu.
This focus on language localization aims to bring AI to more citizens and boost adoption in education, government, and public service sectors. By improving its multi-language capabilities, Anthropic hopes to empower millions of users who communicate in regional Indian languages.
Driving AI for Social Impact
Beyond business, Anthropic is also focusing on AI for societal benefit. The company’s beneficial deployments team will partner with Indian government bodies, nonprofits, and startups to apply Claude’s analytical abilities to public health, education, and agricultural innovation.
For example, the company aims to support data-driven health initiatives and create AI learning tools for schools, helping millions of students access better education. It will also collaborate with local accelerators and social entrepreneurs to integrate AI into community-driven solutions.
Indian AI Startups
Anthropic’s entry into India highlights the country’s growing influence in global AI innovation. Home to several emerging players such as Sarvam AI, Krutrim, and GigaML, India’s AI startup scene is quickly gaining international attention.
With Anthropic joining this ecosystem, experts believe the collaboration between global pioneers and homegrown innovators will accelerate India’s ambition to become a global AI powerhouse — one that prioritizes safety, inclusion, and accessibility in its technological growth.
