Is Google Maps Losing Ground as Delhi Metro Partners with ‘Swadeshi’ Mappls?

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has recently signed a deal with Mappls MapmyIndia, India’s ‘Swadeshi’ digital mapping company, to bring real-time metro information directly to Mappls app users. This move gives over 35 million commuters across Delhi-NCR easy access to train routes, fares, timings, and live updates through a new platform—joining Google Maps, which has long been serving Delhi Metro riders. The partnership aims to boost convenience and travel planning while offering commuters a fresh local alternative to global giants.

According to a DMRC press release, over 35 million users of the Mappls app will gain access to comprehensive Delhi Metro information. This will include details about nearby metro stations, route maps, applicable fares, line changes, train frequency, and estimated travel time — all accessible within the Mappls interface.

The MoU is expected to improve data-sharing capabilities and provide commuters with smarter digital tools to plan their movement within the rapidly expanding Metro network. Officials from both organizations have indicated that this collaboration supports wider efforts to improve multi-modal transportation integration in the National Capital Region.

Delhi Metro Mappls Data Integration

Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of DMRC, said that Delhi Metro continues to explore ways to enhance passenger convenience through the use of innovation and technology. “The integration of DMRC’s metro data with Mappls will help commuters plan better, navigate efficiently, and save time. It is yet another step toward a smarter and more connected public transport ecosystem,” he stated.

Mappls Co-Founder, Rakesh Verma, affirmed that the DMRC data would soon be embedded into its multi-modal transport feature, allowing app users to receive seamless travel guidance throughout the Delhi-NCR area.

According to the company, the latest partnership builds upon similar initiatives, including a recent agreement with Indian Railways announced by the Union Minister for Railways, Electronics, and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw. Verma added that the firm is proud to be recognized as a leading provider of indigenous digital technology solutions that contribute to an Aatmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat vision.

Broader Urban Benefits

A DMRC spokesperson noted that this initiative also focuses on improving transparency and public engagement. Mappls’ advanced “Traffic and Public Engagement Platform” will support these goals by allowing citizens to interact directly through the app.

Once implemented, commuters will not only be able to access metro data but also locate nearby government services, obtain optimized routes with expected travel times, and report civic or traffic issues such as congestion, flooding, parking problems, or accidents from their smartphones.

The instant-sharing of citizen inputs is expected to help authorities respond faster to local issues, improving both traffic management and civic response efficiency. Officials believe that the use of such technology can contribute significantly to the region’s urban mobility framework and help maintain better coordination between agencies.

Safer Roads and Faster Response

Mappls has informed that its platform will further enhance public safety across the Delhi-NCR region. Real-time data integration with road networks will alert users about incidents, breakdowns, or disruptions while supporting emergency response teams in reaching troubled areas faster.

Such smart technology partnerships between public transport agencies and private tech firms are being increasingly viewed as essential tools for building connected, data-driven cities. The collaboration between DMRC and Mappls is expected to serve as a model for similar projects in other major urban centers across India.

The new data-linked system could be rolled out in phases over the coming months, combining real-time feedback mechanisms, dynamic navigation tools, and user-generated civic information—all aimed at making urban mobility in Delhi-NCR smarter, safer, and more efficient.
