Apple has announced a major shift in its executive leadership as Sabih Khan steps into the role of Chief Operating Officer (COO). This move comes as Jeff Williams, who has held the position since 2015, prepares to step down by the end of this month.
Khan’s promotion signals Apple’s commitment to long-term planning and stability in its operations. The decision underlines the company’s belief in internal talent and continuity, especially during times of global supply chain challenges.
Sabih Khan at Apple
Sabih Khan joined Apple in 1995, after beginning his career at GE Plastics. Over the last three decades, he has grown into one of the company’s most important behind-the-scenes leaders. In 2019, he became Senior Vice President of Operations, overseeing Apple’s supply chain, manufacturing, and sustainability initiatives.
He has led the company’s efforts in advanced manufacturing and helped bring more production to domestic locations, all while playing a key role in cutting Apple’s carbon footprint by over 60%.
Tim Cook Praises New COO
Apple CEO Tim Cook shared high praise for Khan, calling him a “brilliant strategist” and a key mind behind Apple’s globally admired supply chain. Cook emphasized Khan’s ability to innovate and adapt quickly in uncertain global situations.
Cook also said Khan’s promotion represents Apple’s continued focus on environmental goals and operational excellence, two pillars of Apple’s business model today.
Jeff Williams Steps Back
Jeff Williams, Apple’s outgoing COO, will remain at the company for the rest of the year. He will continue to lead the design and health divisions, including Apple Watch innovations and health strategies. Williams said he plans to retire in early 2026 after 27 years with Apple and 40 years in the tech industry.
Speaking about Khan’s appointment, Williams said, “Sabih is the most talented operations executive on the planet,” adding that working with him has been one of the highlights of his career.
Williams Leaves a Strong Legacy
Under Williams’ leadership, Apple grew its global supply chain, launched iconic products such as the iPhone, iPod, and Apple Watch, and integrated design and health into Apple’s strategy.
Cook acknowledged Williams’ influence, stating, “Apple wouldn’t be what it is today without Jeff. His impact lives on through the teams he built and the innovations he led.”
Looking Ahead at Apple
This announcement follows another high-level change last year when Kevan Parekh replaced Luca Maestri as Chief Financial Officer. Apple is expected to release its Q3 FY25 earnings later this month, with investors closely watching how these leadership changes shape the company’s next steps.
As Khan steps into his new role, Apple continues to evolve with a strong mix of experience, innovation, and succession planning at its core.
