Press Trust of India has appointed Amanpreet Singh as its new Managing Editor, effective January 1, 2026. The appointment is part of a broader newsroom restructuring exercise intended to strengthen editorial leadership across the organisation’s text and photo operations.
The decision was communicated internally by PTI’s chief executive officer and editor-in-chief Vijay Joshi in a message to staff on New Year’s Eve. According to the communication, the restructuring has been under consideration for the past six months and is aimed at preparing the newsroom for evolving editorial and operational demands.
The changes come at a time when PTI continues to focus on maintaining accuracy, balance, and credibility in news reporting, even as newsrooms face increasing pressures from rapid digital shifts and challenging working conditions.
Editorial Leadership Change
Amanpreet Singh joins PTI from Hindustan Times, where he served as Deputy Executive Editor and was responsible for overseeing the newspaper’s daily edition. His appointment brings experience from both print and digital news operations at a leading national daily.
Singh is a recipient of the Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism and is also a trained lawyer. His areas of professional interest include macroeconomics, law, data-driven reporting, and long-form journalism, which are expected to add depth to PTI’s editorial leadership.
In his internal message, Joshi acknowledged the newsroom’s performance during 2025 and credited the team for upholding editorial standards in a demanding news environment. The appointment of a new Managing Editor was positioned as part of efforts to build on this foundation.
Transition And Continuity
As part of the leadership transition, senior editor Sudhakar Nair is scheduled to retire on March 31, 2026. Until then, he will continue in his current role and support Singh during the transition period.
Nair has been described by PTI’s leadership as a key contributor to the organisation’s journalism over several decades. He is expected to help the incoming Managing Editor familiarise himself with PTI’s work culture, editorial systems, and newsroom processes.
The overlap period is intended to ensure continuity in editorial operations while new leadership responsibilities are gradually assumed.
Veteran Editor’s Career
Sudhakar Nair began his career at PTI in 1979 as a trainee sub-editor in New Delhi. Over nearly 47 years with the organisation, he has worked across various editorial roles and contributed to coverage of major national and state-level political developments.
Between 1998 and 2001, Nair served as PTI’s correspondent in Germany, adding international reporting experience to his long association with the agency. His career has been closely linked with PTI’s evolution as a national news agency.
The appointment of Amanpreet Singh, alongside the planned retirement of a senior editor, marks a significant phase in PTI’s leadership transition. The restructuring is expected to play a role in shaping the organisation’s editorial direction as it adapts to changing reader needs and newsroom priorities in the coming years.
